D'Holbach was known for his generosity, often providing financial support discreetly or anonymously to his friends, amongst them Diderot. It is thought that the virtuous atheist Wolmar in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Julie, ou la nouvelle Héloïse is based on d'Holbach.

He was born in Hamadan, the son of Hajj Sayed Abolghasam Kordestani; he learned French in the Ecole d'Alliance, and moved to Istanbul for a while. He is particularly famous for writing the opera Rastakhiz Iran (Resurrected Iran), which was a reflection of his patriotic spirit.

Iran in 113 years ago

Ernst Hoeltzer (1835-1911) was a German engineer and one of the pioneer photographers in Iran in the 19th century. He came to this country during the rule of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar and spent about twenty years of his life in Isfahan.
